Nutrition Label Makeover

It's about time they updated that 21 year old nutrition label! In 1993, the majority of our scientific evidence in terms of maintaining a healthy weight was focused on avoiding high fat foods based on the fact that they contained more calories per gram as opposed to foods composed mainly of protein or carbohydrates. Now, we know that eating foods high in fats like fish and nuts doesn't actually make you fat, but that sugar is a large contributor to our obesity epidemic.

Here's a photo of the current Nutrition Label and the proposed new label the FDA will now be placing on food packages.

Main differences include:

  • Servings per Container is larger and in bold print.
  • The Calories are extremely prominent, difficult to avoid.
  • Percentage of Daily Value to the left instead of right for a cleaner look.
  • The addition of Added Sugars to differentiate between natural sugars and unhealthy added sugars.
I'll tell you what, I'm happy to finally have something positive happening in the news regarding nutrition in America. There are so many steps that are necessary to be taken to get us away from where we are now and moving in the right direction towards healthier, longer lives. Happy to see this happening!

Question of the Morning:
What are your thoughts on the new nutrition label?
