Healthy Up Your Halloween with These Treats!

Happy Halloween from me and the Fitness Pups! Who needs to carve pumpkins when you have two lil' Punkins of your own? These ones are wayyy cuter!

We wanted to share our Halloween treats with you today! We hope you like them.

Treat #1 A Spooktacular Workout: While the Fittie Pumpkins got their exercise with a morning walk, I got a great full body lift in this morning with my ladies in Sculpt class. I am going to a friend's house this evening for a Halloween celebration and I know that I will most likely indulge in a couple treats. Although Holidays are no reason to take a day (or the week) off from your healthy lifestyle, life is about enjoyment and it's definitely okay to enjoy those extra festive treats. But they taste so much better when you earn them!

Here's what we did this morning, try it on your own. I was a sweaty mess by the time this class was over!

Treat #2 A Healthy Spin on Costumes: Embrace your happy, healthy lifestyle with these homemade costumes that can be thrown together without forking out your life savings for one night of fun.

Grapes: Homemade costume from purple (or green) balloons, black tights and green hair from a wig, dyed mop, rug etc. Cheap and easy! Although navigating around a party might not be quite as simple.

Boxed Red Wine: Using a large, sturdy box, cut out the bottom completely, as well as a hole on each side for arms and one on top for the head and neck to come through. Blow up a photo of your favorite boxed wine to decorate the box, add a wine glass and your set!

Iced Tea: Using a mesh laundry hamper, fill it up with brown/red colored leaves. Then, simply safety pin or sew it across the front of your shirt, folding over the top so that the string is hanging forward. Cut out the label of your favorite box of tea and attach it to the end of the string, and there you have it!

Treat #3 Creepy but Healthy Snacks: Stave off your craving for that candy by filling up with some healthier options. A great way to avoid unhealthy foods at a party is by bringing some healthy snacks for everyone to enjoy. Here are a few recipes that are so good, you can "trick" all your friends into indulging in something healthy!

Strawberry Ghosts- Simply melt up some white chocolate, dip entire strawberry into the chocolate, add three tiny chocolate chips before the white chocolate is completely dry. Refrigerate for a few hours before serving.

Mummy Dogs- These are made by unrolling crescent rolls (the kind you buy in a can) cutting the strips into small pieces, wrapping around the hot dog and baking at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Mustard is used to dot the mummy's eyes. A way to make this healthier? Use vegetarian hot dogs, cut them in thirds and you've got yourself a bunch of mini mummy dogs! The good news about these guys is that you are going to get some protein in, unlike most sugary Halloween candies and cookies.

Snack-O-Lanterns- I've also seen this done with stuffed peppers, and I think it's not only a great, festive healthy option to have on hand, but also would be a fun craft for kids or a family to have fun making together! Simply slice the top off, carve out the insides and set aside for use to fill later. Cut the shapes out for desired pumpkin face and then fill with orange and other fruit bits of your choosing!

Treat #4- Scary Good Tips to Stay on Track:
  • Eat a nutritious, filling breakfast so that you aren't reaching for treats simply because you are hungry.
  • Bring healthy snacks to events or parties so that even if no one else brings anything healthy, you know you can enjoy some of what you brought!
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day.
  • Get in a good workout.
  • Have a plan in place. Whether you have kids who are going to bring home bags of candy or you'll be surrounded by beer and food, set a plan before you are tempted. Maybe you are going to drink one water per beer, or have one pumpkin beer and then switch over to light for the rest of the evening. You might plan to eat dinner before the party so that you don't overindulge while you're there. Kids' candy tempting you? Allow them to chose some of their favorites and then get the rest out of the house! Out of sight, out of mind!
  • Allow yourself to enjoy the evening, focusing on friends and family, rather than food. Be present with those you love and enjoy the Holiday spirit!

The Fitness Pumpkin's and I wish you a fa-BOO-lous day!
