2014 Fitness Trend Awards + What's on the Horizon?

I'm all about exercising in any way that makes you want to continue moving. When clients ask, what is the best exercise to do, my answer is always, the one you will stick with. Exercise should be enjoyable, (if not during, then afterward once you have that amazing reward via endorphin rush!) First and foremost, if you are moving, that's a positive! There are so many ways to reach our one primary goal, fitness. Whatever it is that gets you there, props to you for enduring it!

The Drenched in Sweat, Cant Catch my Breath Award goes to...

Richard Simmons! Just kidding. The sweatiest workout award definitely goes to one of my favorite types of training, and certainly, very effective, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). Not to be done every single day due to high incidence of injury, this is great for healthy populations to endure a few times a week. (Yes, many Crossfit workouts would fall into this category). One other very popular version of HIIT training is Tabata training. Also, a favorite of mine!

Do It Anywhere Award

Body Weight Training. It's free. It's effective. It can be easily modified. Did I mention, it's free?

The Perfect for Anyone Award

Functional training at it's absolute best- TRX Suspension Training. This is ideal for beginners, for experts, for the injured for absolutely anyone under the supervision of a great instructor. The moves are very similar to the activities of daily living making this type of training perfect for even elderly populations or those who simply want to make lifting boxes and putting away dishes easier. Safe and effective, TRX won't be considered a trend for long. I believe it will be here to stay for quite some time.

The Most Bang for Your Buck Award

I know I'm going to have some cringers here, but I'm giving this award to running. Not ideal for every single population but this weight bearing exercise burns calories like crazy, can be done in a pool for those who are injured and is a total body sculpter. The closest we can get to a good run, would be a great HIIT session, which won't give you the same cardiovascular endurance running does. Running intervals and mixing it up with long runs works every cardiovascular system your body uses during workouts, which other trends or techniques simply cannot do to the same extent.

The Exercise We Should All Be Doing Award

This award goes to Yoga! Strengthening the core to the max, while simultaneously working every part of your body and increasing flexibility is great. But it's also the centeredness and breathing techniques involved with this style of exercise that make it a must for everyone. This type of exercise is perfectly compatible with all other forms of training and those Type A personalties that think it's boring and can't stop thinking about their "To-Do Lists" during shavasana, guess what, YOU NEED IT THE MOST!

The winners of my Fitness Trends awards certainly won't be going anywhere anytime soon. What else will 2015 bring???...

Go, Go Gadget Calorie Counters- pace keeper, step calculator, whatever it may be. We love gadgets such as the Fit Bit, Nike Fuel Band and my favorite of course, Garmy! (That'd be my running watch. Things that sweat with me for hours at a time, typically get named like my bike, Trekky and definitely my watches).

Certified Professionals- Can I get a hallelujah? If you frequent this blog, I talk constantly about the importance of making sure you know your sources of information are reliable and educated. There are way too many people out there giving advice that have no credentials to do so, in both nutrition and exercise.

Baby Boomer Fitness- People are growing older every second, and right now we've got the baby boomer generation wanting to get healthier than ever. Exercise programs for adults have already been starting to kick into high gear and our focus will stay on these for at minimum a decade or so, in my personal opinion.

Small Group Personal Training- It's cheaper than individual personal training sessions, but in a small enough group that some individualized attention is still obtained. This type of training can be extremely successful with an experienced trainer when practiced with a group who has similar physical fitness.
